Pantone Colour of the Year 2023

What is the Pantone Colour of the Year for 2023 and how can you incorporate it in your Interior Design? Read on to find out:

Viva Magenta 18-1750 is the Pantone Colour of the Year for 2023. It is bright and energetic. It represents strength and inclusivity. It encourages self-expression and brings people together with its natural vibrancy.

What does Colour of the Year mean?

Since the year 2000 Pantone – the world’s leading colour-matching company – has been publishing their annual choice for colour of the year. They invite the world’s foremost experts in that field and together they select the hue which best represents the design and fashion trends which will be relevant in the upcoming year. This selection carries a lot of weight in the fashion and interior design worlds and the colour of the year is often seen at prominent events and flagship projects.

Why Viva Magenta?

It is a vibrant, vigorous colour inspired by carmine red and its ties to nature. For centuries people have been extracting red from cochineal beetles and using it for dyeing fabrics and in recent years food as well. It is that connection to the Earth that played the biggest role in the selection of Viva Magenta. The colour represents the return to normalcy and the desire of people to reconnect to nature after spending so much of their time indoors over the past couple of years.

It is likely you have seen this colour on clothes, being as trendy as it is, but what about using it in interior design? If you want some tips about how to incorporate magenta into your properties, then read ahead. We have a few ideas – some tasteful, some adventurous.

Using Viva Magenta in the Living Room

Be bold in the living room, it is the space that is the most suited for that. People love spending time in vibrant, richly decorated rooms. Our suggestion is to use the technique of colour drenching. Use Viva Magenta as the central, most prominent colour of the room. Pick a few shades that are close to it and scatter them around the space. To start with you can have a feature wall painted in magenta and a sofa of the same colour opposite it. Take this opportunity to upcycle older furniture like sideboards or coffee tables and dye them in shades of red or pink. Sprinkle yellow décor around the space to introduce some contrast and ground the whole aesthetic with natural tones from wooden furniture.

Using Viva Magenta in the Kitchen

The kitchen requires more restraint. Magenta would fit best when used as an accent colour to give the space some vim and joy. You can introduce chairs upholstered in magenta around the dining table to make the area more dynamic and facilitate dinnertime conversation. If you have neutral-coloured kitchen surfaces you can bring a pop of colour with magenta tiles along the wall. Introduce some other smaller accents like plates or candle holders and you’ve turned an industrial-looking kitchen into one sparkling with character.

Using Viva Magenta in the Bedroom

The bedroom does not need too much vigour, it is usually a room for rest and relaxation. In that case, Viva Magenta can be used as the main colour of the focal points of the room, making the space stand out. A good example of it would be a headboard upholstered in this hue. It would tower over the bed and serve as an immediate eye-catcher. A magenta throw at the bottom of the bed would offer a nice finishing touch. This aesthetic would work particularly well in a darker bedroom centred around a natural theme. The magenta would serve as a refreshing contrast against the sombre design.

Other Uses

Perhaps you don’t want to commit too much. Viva Magenta is only a seasonal colour after all and while it is in vogue this year, it is not considered timeless. In that case, it is best to use it only as an accent around your spaces. If your property is mainly designed around neutral hues then it is easy to incorporate some flushes of Viva Magenta here and there. For that, you can make use of scatter cushions or prints hung on the walls. If you have layered curtains you can change one of them to be dyed in magenta. Or you can use a carpet of that colour. Any of these options, or a combination of them, would serve to bring a touch of vibrancy into your property. And you can keep a look out for the Pantone Colour of 2024 to refresh the space again next year.
